Well, they tried. Gotta give 'em 2 stars for that. The cinematography and lighting looks great, good acting, but the theme has been done better.

Subject: Alright Atom Age Film
It's about a cop that stops traffic because he's heard over the radio that war has broke out. The cop is trying to keep everyone safe. A few side stories going on that are nothing special. The cop is the most interesting character of the bunch.
Really it's not a bad doomsday film made on a limited budget. It's a no frills film concerning a panic of the A-bomb. There's no where to run, no where to hide and to top it off there is a presumed killer among them. A few thrills with a bleak ending.
Worth watching if you have nothing better to do. The film is available online at the Internet Archives.
6/10.

Not that bad.
There were several of these atomic fear movies made in this period.
This is one of them.
All the stock characters are present and accounted for (almost).
The drunken socialite, the grandfather and daughter, the middle aged couple, the truck driver, the hipster, the cop, and assorted hangers on.
Strangely absent is the college professor who has all the answers even though he teaches mathematics.
The cop in this case is a psychotic asshole, he not only believes he's in charge, but that he has the power of life and death over the people he is essentially holding hostage.
Spoiler Alert: He is not immortal.
The quality is average for a low budget production of the period.
All shot on location to save costs, the actors probably provided their own wardrobe and transportation as well.
Worth a look if you're a fan of apocalyptic films, grew up during the era and have fond memories, or just like low budget schlock.

This movie isn't as bad as some make it out to be. Seamon Glass was pretty good as the single-minded simple deputy who follows regulations, although the Brooklyn accent didn't really fit into California. The others were a mixed bag of talent, but the entire thing was pretty effective. Those who lived in that era will probably appreciate the movie more than those who were born later.

Subject: A truck is just as good a shelter as a cement cellar
I watched this movie because I grew up in the time frame when we actually had nuclear bomb drills, just like the fire drills of today's schools. I can't tell you how afraid I was of a nuclear war, I will always remain angry at the people that put that fear in my heart. We had a cellar in the basement that contained my mother's locked liquior cabinet and some canned food. It was made of cement, but had a wooden door so it couldn't have been safe fo a fallout shelter. My dad always said that was our shelter and every time I went in there I cringed at the thought of sitting in there with my mother while she got drunk. Of course being an adult now I would get drunk too if we had a nuclear war. Anyway, the movie was good because it seemed real. The cop was mean, the people were stupid, and the dog was cute. Didn't anybody get the ending??? The ending is a real shocker. Oh, and the acting was okay.

if ghastly means stilted, contrived, idiotic, overbearing, monotonic, distant, regretable, and a time waster- than this is ghastly. if not? well i tried.

This is no "Panic in the Year Zero" (1962). Nevertheless it's not bad considering its low budget and uneven acting talent. Competently directed and shot. The intact print is soft but watchable.

Subject: What a dud of a cop!
Then again most cops are duds anyway with the brains of turnips.. In the back of a truck to withstand a nuclear blast? He had as many marbles as the dog he murdered. Actually the dog was a rocket scientist comparatively.
The premise was pretty good and I liked watching it, but the acting..wheww! There's more suspense reading instructions on a toilet paper wrapper!
Just one question though.. Who exactly in this movie showed any acting talent at all other than maybe the old man and the looters?
Well, in the event of nuclear war stay out of trucks. The tops are flimsy fiberglass.. you'll fry in them if the fiberglass doesn't melt on you.
The ONLY ones who even stood a chance in this silly thing were the kids heading to the mine, but their odds were pretty slim. The old guy had the best idea. Go watch the show instead of pretending there would be anything worth living for afterward. Anyone who wants to survive that is screwier than the people firing them off.
The fear mongering was somewhat justified except they never really did set anything up for survival of the masses. Ducking under desks was just more nonsense. The filthy rich plan to survive, but the rest of us will be the stench they have to breath for ten years when it's over because our corpses won't just clean themselves up and won't rot to quick when even most bacteria is dead... betcha didn't think about that now did ya survivalists?

Despite many flaws, such as uneven acting (some of it was QUITE decent, then there were those lines delivered in true B movie style) the story itself, which is very simple, was also very believable.
The most refreshing thing was that the characters, and their actions, were never just, "movie predictable", rather, their behavior was generally what you might expect from REAL people in such a situation. To avoid spoiling the story, I will not elaborate, since the situation itself IS the story.
I would like to see this film re-made (set in the same time period, and cast with unknown actors) with the script left just as it is for the most part (although I would like to see the big truck with a Walmart logo on it!).
Torn between its brilliant simplicity, and its lackluster simplicity, I'd recommend it to anyone who either lived in/through those times, or just wants to get a feel for the period.
I myself remember hearing the air-raid sirens every month when I was in grammar school in the 1970s , when we were required to drop beneath our desks in case of an attack (which they never told us would have been a nuclear, or at very least, atomic explosion, thus all of our efforts would have been useless anyway.
In conclusion, viewers should find it engaging and entertaining, but don't expect it to blow your mind mind.
Overall I found it to be an interesting snapshot of the socio-psychology of the times.

This was my favorite find here so far (for something I'd never heard of before). It felt to me like Night of the Living Dead, without the zombies. The collapse of human decency as the tension of the situation increased was surprisingly harsh, compared to the other movies I've seen from the time.
The acting isn't spectacular, but for what it is, I found it very engaging.

Back in the 1950s, the Eisenhower administration spread fear of nuclear war everywhere. There was 'Duck and Cover' in the schools, bomb shelters for homes, and air raid shelters in city centers for example. This lead to the production of many exploitation movies on the subject. This one deals about as honestly as they could in 1962 with the thoughts, actions, and emotions that the threat of imminent nuclear destruction would create in people. Give me 'Dr. Stranelove' any day!
I downloaded the DivX file. It's actually AVI format with MPEG4 video and MP2 audio. It looks like a poor digital transfer - very contrasty.
